How Your Thoughts Shape Your Business Reality: A Guide for Coaches and Therapists

October 05, 20244 min read

In the realm of personal development and digital marketing, one concept stands out: mindset. You've likely heard the phrase "mindset is everything" countless times, especially if you’re involved in self-development. But what does this mean in practice, particularly for coaches, therapists, and holistic practitioners?

Understanding Mindset and Its Impact

According to Psychology Today, a mindset refers to the beliefs that guide our reactions to various situations. However, studies in neuroscience reveal a striking statistic: only 5% of our cognitive activities, including decisions, emotions, and actions, are conscious. This means a staggering 95% is generated subconsciously. So, how can we harness the power of our mindset to work in our favor? The key lies in self-awareness.

By becoming aware of our ingrained patterns and limiting beliefs, we can actively shape our mindset and, consequently, our business outcomes. The brain operates much like a car on autopilot; when we first learn to drive, we consciously think about every step. Over time, these actions become second nature, allowing us to focus on other tasks. This automatic processing plays a significant role in how we navigate our business.

The Power of Focus

Social psychologist Timothy D. Wilson estimates that our unconscious mind can process 11 million pieces of information per second, while our conscious mind only manages about 40 pieces per second. This highlights the importance of what we choose to focus on. For example, if we concentrate solely on the challenges of finding clients, that’s what our brain will recognize as our reality.

Tony Robbins provides a simple exercise to illustrate this concept. If you spend just a few seconds looking for blue objects in your surroundings, you will filter out all other colors. When you close your eyes and try to recall the orange objects, you may struggle because your brain didn't register them as important.

This principle applies directly to your business. If you constantly think about your struggles—like not being able to grow your practice or feeling stuck—your brain will only gather evidence to support those thoughts. Conversely, if you shift your focus to the abundance of opportunities around you, you’ll start noticing potential clients everywhere.

Shifting Your Mindset for Success

Let’s look at how our past experiences and beliefs can affect our actions. For instance, a woman may fear flying due to a belief that it’s dangerous. This fear causes her to notice news stories about plane crashes while ignoring the greater risks associated with driving.

Similarly, many of us carry limiting beliefs formed in childhood. If you grew up feeling the need to please others to avoid conflict, this pattern can carry over into adulthood. You might find yourself hesitating to ask for a raise or attracting clients, believing that it might upset them.

The Framework for Transformation

Understanding how our thoughts influence our actions is essential for personal and business growth. Here’s a framework to illustrate this:

  1. Neutral Circumstance: Signing clients

  2. Thoughts:

    • Default Pattern: “I can’t find clients.”

    • Intentional Pattern: “What I offer is truly helpful.”

  3. Feelings:

    • Default Pattern: Feeling stuck, insecure.

    • Intentional Pattern: Feeling inspired, motivated.

  4. Actions:

    • Default Pattern: Procrastination, making excuses.

    • Intentional Pattern: Reaching out, networking.

  5. Outcomes:

    • Default Pattern: No clients signed.

    • Intentional Pattern: Increased client interest and engagement.

Embracing Intentionality

Recognizing the power of intentional thoughts can significantly alter your experience as a coach or therapist. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by a heavy workload, consider reframing your thoughts. You might say, "I can delegate some tasks, and I don’t need to do everything today." This shift can alleviate pressure and inspire productivity.

Your thoughts are not just reflections of reality; they actively shape it. As Henry Ford famously said, "Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you're right."

Success is 100% attainable

Ultimately, to overcome resistance and achieve your goals, you must demonstrate to yourself that success is attainable. And also, you need to define your definition of success. No matter what success looks like for you, it requires regular practice in choosing empowering thoughts and beliefs. Just as a fit body requires consistent exercise, a healthy mind needs ongoing nurturing.

By consciously selecting your focus, you can create a positive feedback loop, enhancing your motivation and ultimately, your success in business.
